VintageMotos Museum, Denver Colorado : Jim Dillard loves motorcycles. Sometimes it seems like he never met one he didn't like, but that's not totally true, his passion has a focus: small cc Italian motorcycles. Well, those and big cc Italian motorcycles, and some other Euro bikes that are beautiful and technically interesting (or both!) Over the years he managed to collect almost 200 of them, bikes so rare and special that no matter how much you know about this sort of thing it's a safe bet Jim has many you have never seen in person and more than a few you have never even heard of. Jim is a sharer, a generious guy and his dream was to find a space that would allow him to display them all for the public. Years and years of focus on the mission and his dream came true, Vintagemotos opened to the public. While these photos can in no way replace a visit to Jim's collection, they might give you a good idea of what you are missing if you don't stop by. Join me for a walk through Vintagemotos.

"Deja Blue" Debut, Barber Vintage Weekend, 2008 : Barber Vintage Weekend is always special but 2008 Cook Neilson was the guest of honor and that made it even better. Add to that the surprise debut of "Deja Blue", a replica of Old Blue commissioned by Barbers Museum from Rich Lambrechts to surprise Cook and Phil Schilling and the weekend made magic. See it all right here. Story and photos by Vicki Smith For more on Rich Lambrechts go to www.desmopro.com

Art of the Motorcycle - Las Vegas : The Art of the Motorcycle exhibit was a bridge of sorts. It changed the way many non-motorcycle people looked at motorcycles. When it opened in NYC at the Museum of Modern Art under a storm of controversy and immediatly became the best attended exhibit in MOMA history it earned the privledge of going on the road. This one, the Las Vegas exhibit, was the only one showcased in a facility built to hold it. Frank Gehry
designed the exibition, Rem Koolhaas designed the 63,000 square foot museum. I'll let the LA Times art critic take it from here: "A spectacular phantasmagoria of stainless steel plates, translucent glass, steel mesh and strobe lights, it encapsulates all you need to know about a motorcycle's modern meaning. Gehry uses his machine materials to fracture, reflect and diffuse light, creating sexy, highly organic, frankly theatrical forms, from billowing clouds and monumental floral blossoms to great curtain swags. Glamour and erotic thrill summarize the motorcycle aesthetic."

Loved Ones both Singles and Twins : "Could you bring out a couple of bikes that the Ferrari guys might appreciate?" asked Eric Rassmusan from Cavallino, the annual Ferrari convention in Palm Beach, FL. I took these photos at the end of the day after the Friday track day at Moroso Motorsports Park of the three bikes we brought out for display. These three bikes are personal favorites, rare and special - all three began life in Bologna, traveled to other countries and ended up here in the USA. One, the 175SS literally changed my life. It's my absolute favorite machine. Turns out Sandhill Cranes like it too....

Barber Motorcycle Museum April 2006 : Barber Museum in Birmingham Alabama is one of my favorite ways to spend a day. I have been to lots of museums but this one is hard to beat. There are over 1000 motorcycles of every type displayed both creatively and beautifully. I took these during the AMA Superbike weekend April 2006. Photos by Vicki Smith

Novegro Motorcycle Swap Meet, Milan, Italy 2008 : In Italy it seems like there is always a swap meet somewhere. They pop up in town squares and out in fields like the sunflowers that seem to grow everywhere. But the really big ones are something to see, acres and acres of moto "stuff" some so rare you never thought it would be possible, all bracketed by piles of things not worth the benzina to haul them. I love the atmosphere of the dealings, the chatter in Italian, the smell of two stroke oil and sounds of motors being fired up for potential buyers. It's a photo safari as well, everywhere you look there's something to share. Oh, and the food! Best porchetta sandwiches and french fries you can imagine, sugar dipped fried dough and crepes with nutella, it's all integral to the experience. Join me for a walk around Novegro....

Novegro Motorcycle Swap Meet, Milan Italy, November 2007 : Novegro Mostra Scambio is held in Milan each year at a fairground right next to the Linate airport. Because it's held in winter the crowd is mostly local - Italians, Germans with a few Brits thrown in for good measure. Americans are rare, the combination of the dollar vs the euro and the expected weather generally keeps them away. The meet covers three huge structures and a number of lots outside. So many people attend it's crazy - vendors and buyers are everywhere as far as the eye can see. And what they have for sale, well, that's where the photos come in because there's no way to describe it - from the amazing to the undefinable, it's all here in droves. Join me for a look at Novegro....

Morbidelli Museum May 2006, Pesaro Italy : The Morbidelli Museum is located in Pesaro Italy, very near the start place of this years Motogiro d'Italia. This is the second year we have visited what many people consider to be one of the most important collections of motorcycles in the world. It's the result of 25 years of research and collecting - 3000 sq meters, 400 motorcycles ranging from 1900 to 1980.
Giancarlo Morbidelli, creator of the museum and father of Gianni Morbidelli F1 racing driver, has been passionate for motorcycles since childhood. With his engineering company as sponsor he built his own racing motorcycles and won 4 world titles in the 70s. He might be best known for producing his own motorcycle. A V8 850cc motorcycle, you may have seen one on display in the Art of the Motorcycle or at the Barber Museum in the USA. He's a staple in the Italian motorcycling industry, considered a mechanical genius and immensly respected worldwide. The museum maintains limited hours, this visit was by pre-arrangement on a Sunday at a time they are normally closed. As, in the past we felt lucky to be able to visit this shrine to this amazing man's life work.

Motorcycle Swap Meet and NCR visit May 2006 - Bologna Italy : We started out at Rino Caracchi's NCR workshop where I met "Vicki 5", my mount for this years event as well as had a visit with the Caracchi family. Then it was off to Gambettola for the mostra scambio (swap meet in Italian) for two days of bargain hunting (with much success!) For those who have a passion for bargains and the thrill of the hunt, as well as a love of old motorcycles, Italy's "mostra scambio's" are heaven on earth. This one was about 30 minutes from Rimini, the city that will host the start of the 2006 Motogiro d'Italia, was both antiques and motorcycles, attended mostly by locals (unlike the bigger sales) and provided two days of entertainment as well as a couple of new motorcycles and quite a few additions to the parts bin and collection back in the US. What can I say? We're not sure if it's a passion or an addiction but we had a great time!
